Carbohydrate Chemistry aims to bring together the latest developments in this field by a series of critical reviews, covering areas from both chemical and biological perspective. The synthesis of novel carbohydrates and carbohydrate bring mimetics continues to be a major challenge for organic chemists, not least because of the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of carbohydrate science. In particular, the understanding of biomolecular processes, the progress toward new materials, the development of low-cost and environmentally friendly molecules with industrial applications are among the topics currently being pursued by carbohydrate researchers. The amount of research in this field appearing in the organic chemical literature is increasing because of the enhanced importance of the subject, especially in areas of medicinal chemistry and biology. In no part of the field is this more apparent than in the synthesis of oligosaccharides required by scientists working in glycobiology.
