Reseña del libro

This book is about the interplay between identities, codes, stereotypes and politics governing the various constructions and deconstructions of gender in several Western and non-Western societies (Germany, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Cameroon, Indonesia, Vietnam, and others). Readers are invited to discover the realm of gender studies and to reflect upon the transformative potentialities of globalisation and interculturality. Contributors present debates about the multiplicity of gender identities, the influence particular cultures or local traditions have on perceiving and living gender, and the different discourses (the academic one included) on these matters. Furthermore, the authors look at the ways in which codes for representing women and female nature are constructed and usually used in literary writings and television productions. Discussions on private, domestic, social, legal, ideological/political matters related to living together within gendered frames follow. Finally, social and political constraints on women are scrutinised, relying on several examples of women's under-representation and gender-based barriers.
