Introduction about Katsushika Hokusai and his masterpiece,One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji 25 pages to color, with 50 original woodblock printsLay-flat binding and high-quality paper-easy to use with all your fine coloring tools One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji is a masterpiece by a master artist. Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was already in his mid-seventies when he completed work on the first volume of this illustrated book, which highlights the beauty and spirituality of Japan's venerated mountain. Published in 1834, it followed close on the heels of his renowned print series Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji (c. 1831-1833). While echoes of these iconic prints may be found within the pages of One Hundred Views, they sit among a wealth of bold new compositions as Hokusai exploited the monochromatic tones and format of the woodblock-printed book to their maximum. The illustrations presented here are drawn from early editions of the first two volumes of One Hundred Views held by the Chester Beatty, one of Ireland's national cultural institutions. This award-winning museum in the heart of Dublin was first established in the early 1950s, when mining magnate Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968) brought his remarkable collection of manuscripts, paintings, and prints to Ireland. Spanning the arts of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, Beatty's collection stands as testament to the richness and diversity of human creative expression even as it continues to captivate and inspire.
