Until the philosopher Hume brought the conception of humor as the capacity of seeing things in their infinite and eternal aspect into the English language, there was no word in the English vocabulary with which to adequately express that attribute of God which is implied in the Hebrew word "chesed." Love, mercy, grace and loving kindness translate it but imperfectly. To have humor and see things under their infinite aspect is to know all about them. Thus humor becomes the explanatory and complementary attribute of an almighty intelligence within and behind the "all."
