John Bremen and his wife, Daphne Whitacre, launch a new career as private investigators after leaving their previous government jobs in the Dallas, Texas, area. John had become disillusioned with the FBI, and Daphne was frustrated that her career in law enforcement was also going no place fast. They decided to move to John’s hometown of Ashburn, Alabama, where he had graduated from college in 1968. They bought a dilapidated, old mansion, and immediately were hired to find the rightful owner of that estate, who had disappeared fifty years before.
