The main character May returns home to her grandparents' farm where she meets an unusual young man who asks for her help in saving himself and the aspen root from which he springs. At the same time an oil company is threatening to begin drilling for natural gas near the aspen grove. May and her fellow activists mount a campaign to stop the proposed fracking and are ultimately aided by knowledge that had been lost a century before. May finds love in all its forms and discovers that which matters most to her.
