In Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol," when Ebenezer Scrooge cried out to his partner: "But you were always a good man of business, Jacob!" Marley's ghost then lamented: "The common welfare was my business and mercy, charity, forbearance, and benevolence were all my business! Mankind was my business, while the dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!" Then flowed remorse for missed opportunities and lost potential: "At this time of the rolling year," the spectre grieved, "I suffer most. Why did I walk thru crowds of fellow beings with my eyes turned down and never raise them to the blessed Star which led the Wise Men to a poor abode?
