Some of these accounts are hardly stories at all, but rather studies in elusive impressions and half-remembered snatches of dream. Plot is everywhere negligible, and atmosphere reigns untrammelled. Su escrito, Los Sauces, es considerado uno de los mejores cuentos de terror de la historia. Fue una de las principales influencias de H.P. Lovecraft, quien lo definió como «maestro absoluto e incuestionable de la atmósfera espectral».
