Es madre, científica, profesora condecorada y miembro inscrito de la Nación Ciudadana Potawatomi. Su primer libro, Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses, recibió la medalla John Burroughs y otros escritos han aparecido en Orion, Whole Terrain y numerosas revistas científicas. En 2022, Monique Gray Smith adaptó Braiding Sweetgrass para adultos jóvenes. Robin realiza numerosas giras.
