there is an increasing need to take an holistic view of landslide hazard and risk through the development of integrated approaches to analysis, perception and management. there is a further need to offer solutions that themselves have relevance to concerned organizations, landowners, land managers and researchers. this is the first book to offer such an integrated approach. the first section provides an overview of the concept of risk research involving (a) the calculation of hazard, (b) definition of elements at risk and (c) determination of the vulnerability of risk elements exposed to the respective hazard. part ii addresses the sociological and psychological issues as well as highlighting the risk perception of the different parties involved (e.g., private land owners, government agencies, research institutions, insurance companies etc.). it also highlights the growing number of hazard research centres and their importance with respect to distribution of information related to hazards and risk. part iii focuses on risk management and part iv gives global case studies illustrating a variety of integrated approaches.
