The Puranas are believed to have dominated the Indian thought system since times immemorial. They deal with not only values and ethos, but are also said to have guided Indians in their conduct. They also throw light on our glorious past. Padma Purana is a treatise by Dr. Vinay.The Padma Purana claims to be Sattva Purana, which means purity and goodness. Believed to have been complied between the fourth and fifteenth centuries, it is one of the eighteen Puranas and is also called Gita Mahatmya Padma Purana.The text has been categorised into two parts. The first category has five khandas and second version has six khandas. The five khandas are Shrishti Khanda, Bhumi Khanda, Svarga Khanda, Patala Khanda and Uttara Khanda. The six khandas are the Brahma khandas. The Srishti Khanda is in the form of a conversation that takes place between Bhishma and the sage Pulastya. A famous place of pilgrimage, Pushkara, is also described. Bhumi Khanda describes prithvi and the stories of Prithu and Yayati. The Svarga Khanda deals with the details of the cosmos and how it was created. The relevance and importance of holy places and geographical expansion including its mountains and rivers is also dealt with. It also talks about the people of India in ancient times. The Patala Khanda portrays the life story of lord Ram, an avatar of Vishnu. The Puranas are incomplete without the mention of Lord Krishna. Few chapters of the Patala Khanda are collectively termed as the Shiv Gita. The Uttar Khanda narrates the conversation between Shiva and Parvati, wherein metaphysical aspects are explained.Padma Purana was published by Diamond Books in 2007.
