The novel follows the adventures of a group of young pioneers, including 16-year-old Henry Ware and his friends Paul Cotter, Tom Ross, and Shif'less Sol Hyde. The group of friends sets out on a journey through the wilderness, facing challenges such as hostile Native American tribes, wild animals, and harsh weather conditions. Along the way, they meet other settlers, including a group of French explorers and a family of refugees from a Native American attack.
