Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure which is used to treat fracture, arthritis or other conditions which restrict the movement of the hip joint. The surgery involves removing and replacing the damaged cartilage and bone with prosthetic components. The hip joint implants are composed of two parts, a ball portion and a socket portion. These two components can be either press fit or cemented into place. The technique for the surgery is chosen on the basis of the strength and quality of the bone. A combination of the two with a non-cemented socket and a cemented stem can also be used.
