Makoto Shinkai (1973 en Koumi, Japón) es un director, guionista, animador, productor y artista visual japonés que ha revolucionado el panorama del anime contemporáneo. Tras estudiar literatura japonesa en la Universidad de Chuo y participar activamente en clubes literarios y de dibujo, Shinkai inició su carrera profesional como diseñador gráfico en la empresa de videojuegos Falcom, donde desarrolló cinemáticas para títulos populares y dio sus primeros pasos en la animación digital.

Su trayectoria artística despegó con el cortometraje Ella y su gato (1999), obra que ganó varios premios y le abrió las puertas de la industria. Sin embargo, fue Voces de una estrella distante (2002), un trabajo autoproducido, el que lo consolidó como una figura emergente gracias a su innovador estilo visual y narrativa emotiva.
