In 1968, Bette Howland was thirty-one, a single mother of two young sons, struggling to support her family on the part-time salary of a librarian; and laboring day and night at her typewriter to be a writer. One afternoon, while staying at her friend Saul Bellow's apartment, she swallowed a bottle of pills. W-3 is both an extraordinary portrait of the community of Ward 3, the psychiatric wing of the Chicago hospital where she was admitted; and record of a defining moment in a writer's life. The book itself would be her salvation: she wrote herself out of the grave. First published in 1974, the memoir that launched Bette Howland's career is being reissued as part of A Public Space's ongoing revival of "one of the significant writers of her generation." Yiyun Li (Beijing, 1972) es una aclamada escritora y profesora china-estadounidense, reconocida por su estilo sobrio y profundo que explora la soledad, el dolor y la historia china. Tras formarse en inmunología, emigró a EE. UU. en 1996, cambiando la ciencia por la escritura en inglés. Es autora de numerosas novelas y ensayos premiados.

iyun Li (李翊雲) nació el 4 de noviembre de 1972 en Pekín, China. Se formó inicialmente en ciencias, obteniendo una licenciatura en la Universidad de Pekín y una maestría en inmunología en la Universidad de Iowa. Sin embargo, su pasión por la escritura la llevó a cambiar de rumbo, obteniendo una maestría en escritura creativa en la misma universidad .

Li escribe exclusivamente en inglés y sus obras han sido traducidas a más de 20 idiomas. Entre sus novelas destacan The Vagrants y Where Reasons End, así como su colección de relatos A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, que fue adaptada al cine por Wayne Wang .

Ha recibido numerosos premios, incluyendo el PEN/Hemingway Award, el Windham-Campbell Prize y una beca MacArthur. En 2022, fue elegida para formar parte de la Academia Estadounidense de las Artes y las Ciencias .

Actualmente, Li es profesora de escritura creativa en la Universidad de Princeton. Su vida personal ha influido profundamente en su obra; tras enfrentar episodios de depresión y la trágica pérdida de sus dos hijos por suicidio en 2017 y 2024, respectivamente, ha explorado estos temas en sus escritos, como en su novela Where Reasons End .
