April 17, 1943…I was firmly established in my little seat near the door looking over my notes before class, when the air cadets ambled into the hall and just stood there gaping in at me. Well, I was determined not to look up, you know how ’tis when you're being constantly stared at, you can stand it just so long. Well, that point came, and I merely glanced over, and there they were, grinning like a bunch of six-year-olds. So I just smiled back. Now I wish I hadn't. So help me, it was like a firecracker being set off. Started with, "Hey! Blondie? What's your name?" I continue to look at my notes. Teacher finds his way into the room and stands up front listening to the goings on. “Hey blondie! Where do you live? What's your phone number? What's your name? Etc. etc." So geezle-peezle, I figure I’d better shut them up ‘fore prof. starts griping at me. So I said, “Ssshh.” Answer: "We don't have to ssshhh. We’re at ease."
