America America, The Land of Dreams by D. Drew This novel is about the Chinese in America from the 1980s to the 1990s when students from China came to study in American colleges. For the first time the Chinese from Taiwan and those from the Mainland met. Their totally different social, political and economic backgrounds were reflected in their views and outlooks, and their experiences in coping with living in America. After years of struggle some found their dreams. Some found disappointment and desperation. Then there were the American Born Chinese who have a different set of experiences and concerns. Unlike other novels by Chinese-American writers that complain about racial discrimination, prejudice, and non-acceptance, or by native Chinese writers who only write about China, this novel is unique in its point of view and approach. The writer takes an objective stand in presenting the lives and experiences of different types of Chinese in America, and an unbiased observation, comparison and comments on the two societies, that of the America and the China.
