Apocalyptic visions and prophecies from Zarathustra to yesterday form the luxuriant panorama in Eugen Weber's profound and elegant book. Beginning with the ancients of the West and the Orient and, especially, with those from whom we received our religions, the Jews and earliest Christians, Weber finds that an absolute belief in the end of time, when good would do final battle with evil, was omnipresent. Eugen Weber (1925–2007) fue un historiador estadounidense de origen rumano, especializado en la historia contemporánea de Francia. Estudió en la Universidad de Cambridge y en la Sorbona, y fue profesor en la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles (UCLA), donde también se desempeñó como decano. Su enfoque pragmático y narrativo lo convirtió en una figura destacada en los estudios sobre la modernización y la identidad nacional.

Entre sus obras más reconocidas se encuentra De campesinos a franceses: La modernización del mundo rural (1870–1914) (1976), traducida al español en 2023, donde analiza cómo la Francia rural se integró a la nación moderna. Otras publicaciones notables incluyen Variedades del fascismo (1964), Francia, fin de siglo (1986) y Los años huecos: Francia en los años 30 (1994). Su trabajo ha sido fundamental en el estudio de la historia social y política de Francia.
