This book presents numerous case studies illustrating engineering strategies which have been used to produce quiet ships. It reflects the author’s personal experience as a consultant on hundreds of vessels. Lessons learned highlight the optimization of treatments, or how to deal with design/construction problems. The intent is to expose the marine community to key facets, lessons learned, and realistic conditions for controlling noise and vibration on ships. Numerous types of vessels are included from large commercial vessels to research vessels to work boats to small boats. Consideration of airborne, structureborne, fluid-borne sources and paths are included. Resulting habitability, sonar self- and radiated-noise environments are covered.  Potential resonant noise and vibration situations are described.  Attention to distinctive acoustic sources and modeling problems that may appear are shared. Steps in the process from concept design through delivery covered to point out salient acoustic issues. Examples include new design, rehab, or conversions.
