Rick Fields, cuyo nombre era Frederick Douglas Fields, nació el 16 de mayo de 1942 en Queens, Nueva York, Estados Unidos. Fue periodista, poeta, escritor e historiador especializado en el desarrollo del budismo en Estados Unidos. Durante su juventud se relacionó con poetas de la generación Beat, como Allen Ginsberg y Gary Snyder.

A finales de la década de 1960 comenzó su carrera periodística trabajando para el Whole Earth Catalog. Posteriormente se desempeñó como editor de publicaciones relacionadas con la espiritualidad y el budismo, entre ellas Yoga Journal y Vajradhatu Sun. También fue editor colaborador de la revista Tricycle: The Buddhist Review.

Su obra más conocida es How the Swans Came to the Lake: A Narrative History of Buddhism in America, un estudio sobre la historia y expansión del budismo en Estados Unidos. También escribió Chop Wood, Carry Water y The Code of the Warrior. Junto con Bernard Glassman escribió Instructions to the Cook, publicado en 1996.

Fields también escribió poesía y abordó su experiencia con el cáncer en su libro Fuck You, Cancer and Other Poems. Murió el 6 de junio de 1999 en California, a los 57 años. Su trabajo contribuyó significativamente a la difusión y comprensión del budismo en Occidente.
