The first written version was published in Napoli by Giambattista Basile, in his Pentamerone. It was later reprised, along with other Basile's tales, by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passe, and by the Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection Grimms' Fairy Tales.
