For the first time, the shepherd boy, Nicky, is alone in the mountains with his herd of goats. All of a sudden, a storm strikes and destroys the shepherd's cottage and everything in it. Nicky embarks on a perilous journey back to his home valley, carrying nothing but a torn blanket. In the darkness of night, Nicky spots a big owl. Can the mysterious creature help Nicky find his way home? --- Het is de eerste keer dat de herdersjongen Niki alleen in de bergen is met zijn kudde geiten. Er steekt opeens een storm op, die de herdershut met alles erin vernielt. Niki begint een zware tocht terug naar de vallei waar hij woont, met alleen maar een gescheurde deken bij zich. In de donkere nacht komt een grote uil hem redden. Beschermd door de grote vleugels van de uil is de kleine reiziger niet meer bang om in slaap te vallen. De dorpelingen zijn erg verbaasd wanneer Niki thuiskomt met een uil, met gele ogen, op zijn schouder. "Hij is een geweldige vriend," zegt Niki, terwijl hij de vogel aait.
