Due to incompressibility of pore water and transfer of earthquake stress, there is tendency to increase in pressure of the pore water. With increase in pore water pressure, effective confining pressure decreases, leading to a significant loss of shear strength. It is resulted in loosing contact between the soil particles. This phenomenon causes significant damage to the structures above that rely on soil for support.
