Ambrose Bierce was one of the strangest phenomena of American letters. The adjectives used to describe his writing -- and character -- tend to have a rather uncomplimentary ring: venomous, vindictive, paranoid, rancorous, malevolent; yet few would deny his brilliance of intellect and style.
