Reseña del libro "Headgate (en Inglés)"

In the arid West, the federal government spent a century delivering water to make land productive. In the humid East, it spent the same century removing water for the same reason. Same commitment. Opposite programs. One republic.Headgate is a national history of American water infrastructure told as a single argument. From the irrigation ditches of the Arkansas Basin to the drainage tile of the Corn Belt, from Hoover Dam to the Mississippi levees, from the Ogallala Aquifer to the Everglades, twelve regimes of federal water management emerge as one continuous project: the making of a producer republic on North American land. The book opens in the 2026 drought year, when Bureau of Reclamation operations at Lake Powell reveal what a century of building has actually purchased - and what it now costs. It traces the founding argument to the 1889 constitutional conventions, the dam-building era Marc Reisner made famous, the groundwater mining that feeds the beef and grain economy, the California conveyance system, the New Mexico acequias that predate the federal frame, and the Great Lakes Compact that shows what regional sovereignty can still do. Then it turns east: the 1927 Mississippi flood and the levee system it built, the drainage districts that dewatered the Corn Belt, the navigation channel that carries the surplus, and the Everglades reversal now underway.Leonard Meyer writes as a Colorado rancher whose thirty-eight years inside the American beef industry ran from a Haskell County feedyard at thirteen to Big Four kill floors in Kansas, Texas, and Colorado. He has operated Luna Mesa Ranch on the Arkansas Basin since 2011, where the water arrives by truck from Pueblo Reservoir. He engages the standing corpus - Reisner's Cadillac Desert, Worster's Rivers of Empire, Barry's Rising Tide, Wilkinson, Fleck, deBuys - on their own terms, then argues past them. The closing position is reform, not dismantle. The infrastructure was built for a reason. The reason still holds. What it needs is honest accounting and constitutional discipline, in the East and the West alike.
