A swirling cloud of them lifted from Becca's corpse, so many flies, a nearly solid shadow formed beneath them. The buzzing from the flies in flight mixed with the buzzing of panic singing in my ears. So much blood and so many flies. I knew Becca before she was shoved under a pile of brush on my farm and left to rot. She and her husband had just moved to the farm connected to ours. We weren't friends, yet, but I'd liked her. I'm anxious around most people, and prefer the solitary company of my pigs. I dislike Sheriff Katie Rodriguez the most. After ten years, her betrayal still stings. But in a small town, you're forced to deal with people you'd rather avoid. Finding a murdered woman, half eaten by pigs and missing a hand, puts things into perspective. Katie and I will just have to play nice. Hopefully, the dark voice in my head will play nice, too. "Or I'll win and you'll finally give in. No one will miss you, no one needs you. Why are you even still alive?" the evil voice tells me. Even a lonely, frightened farmer can find out the truth about a murder, but closing in on him is dangerous. I'm not sure which is worse - a killer desperate to keep me from finding the truth - or the killer in my mind. Maybe I can stop them both....
