Reseña del libro "أحب ابنة عمي - I Love My Cousin (Female) - Uḥibb Ibnat ʿammī (en Árabe)"

The timeless love stories between Qays and his cousin Layla, Urwah and Afra, and before them Antarah and Abla, were not merely tales of romance filled with passionate poetry, heartache, longing, and fading hopes. They also offered vivid portrayals of social life and family relationships in Arab culture. These stories were much more profound, meaningful, and historically rooted than mere love tales.

Those love stories united true affection with bitter deprivation, later immortalized in poetry. Yet they would never have endured in our collective memory if Layla had been forced to marry Qays, or if she had been promised to him from the cradle, or if their relationship was simply the result of a tribal tradition passed down through generations.

It is quite common for a father whose daughter is proposed to by her cousin, or a young man wanting to marry his maternal cousin, or a girl engaged to her paternal cousin-to ask, and rightly so: Is there any harm in marrying a relative?

In this book, we seek to explore the relationship between a man and his cousin-stripping away the exaggerations or dismissals that have clouded the issue-in order to look at this unique bond with objectivity and scientific reasoning, so that we can reach a clear understanding of a question still often raised: Does the harm of marrying relatives outweigh its benefits?
