Stephen R. Platt es un historiador estadounidense especializado en la historia de China moderna, con un enfoque particular en el siglo XIX y las relaciones exteriores de la dinastía Qing. Es profesor en la Universidad de Massachusetts Amherst y obtuvo su doctorado en historia china en la Universidad de Yale en 2004. Su investigación se centra en los conflictos y transformaciones que marcaron el declive del Imperio chino y su interacción con las potencias occidentales.

Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentra Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom: China, the West, and the Epic Story of the Taiping Civil War (2012), que recibió el Premio Cundill de Historia.
