Víctor Marie Hugo (Besanzón, Francia, 1802 - 1885) fue un escritor, poeta, dramaturgo y político francés, figura central del Romanticismo y una de las voces literarias más influyentes del siglo XIX. Su obra abarca novelas emblemáticas como Los Miserables (1862), que denuncia la injusticia social en la Francia del siglo XIX, y Nuestra Señora de París (1831), que retrata con fuerza la vida en el París medieval. En teatro, revolucionó el género con piezas como Hernani (1830) y Cromwell (1827), mientras que su poesía, destacada en colecciones como Las contemplaciones (1856) y La leyenda de los siglos (1859-1883), combina lirismo y compromiso social.

Exiliado durante cerca de 20 años por su oposición al régimen de Napoleón III, produjo gran parte de sus obras más significativas en ese período, también ampliando su labor política como diputado y senador tras su regreso.
