Im Jahr 719 ubernahm der alemannische Kleriker Otmar als Abt die Verantwortung fur die religiose Gemeinschaft am Grab des heiligen Gallus. Unter ihm entwickelte sich das Kloster St. Gallen zu einem Zentrum mit uberregionaler Bedeutung. Gleichzeitig kam es zu entscheidenden kirchlichen und politischen Veranderungen im Frankenreich und den angrenzenden Gebieten. Trotz der schwierigen und komplexen Uberlieferungslage lassen die Quellen wichtige Entwicklungen in der Darstellung des Abbatiats Otmars, der Klostergeschichte von St. Gallen sowie des Monchtums und der Vorstellungen, die es beeinflussten, erkennen. Die Beitrage in diesem Sammelband gehen diesen Entwicklungslinien nach.
