Conrad, like most Americans, felt imprisoned to a soulless corporation. Dreams of escaping the 9-5 and permanently walking away from cubicle row dominated his thoughts. But that was just daydreaming. Mortgage payments, car notes and credit card debt were just a few of the shackles that kept him bound to an existence that he didn't want. He and his wife started working on a revolutionary concept. They started actively designing a life they would like to live instead of living a life that was arbitrarily unfolding before them. They finalized their escape plan and with fear and trepidation of an unknown future, they began a new life. If you have every thought about quitting your job, selling all of your stuff and sailing away, this book is for you. Conrad does an excellent job of telling their story in a "laugh out loud" manner that will take you from his last days as an employee at a refinery to their garage sale where they eliminated most of their possessions to loading up their boat and sailing away. This book is certainly not for everyone. If you can't fathom the humor in a story about unpleasant medical visits then you should look elsewhere. If you are a sailing purist and want to hear stories about giant waves and near death experiences, there is nothing like that in this book. If you would like to read a funny book that will have you laughing out loud about a family's pursuit of escaping the 9 to 5 and living a life of travel and adventure, then you will certainly enjoy this story.
