Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was an influential French writer who was perhaps the leading exponent of literary realism of his country. He is known especially for his first published novel, Madame Bovary, for his Correspondence, and for his scrupulous devotion to his style and aesthetics. The celebrated short story writer Maupassant was a protégé of Flaubert. Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin (1804-1876), best known by her pseudonym George Sand, was a French novelist and memoirist. She is equally well known for her much publicized romantic affairs with a number of artists, including the composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin and the writer Alfred de Musset. She corresponded with Gustave Flaubert. Despite their obvious differences in temperament and aesthetic preference, they eventually became close friends. Excerpt: "You worry me when you tell me that your book will blame the patriots for everything that goes wrong. Is that really so? and then the victims! it is quite enough to be undone by one's own fault without having one's own foolishness thrown in one's teeth. Have pity! There are so many fine spirits among them just the same! Christianity has been a fad and I confess that in every age it is a lure when one sees only the tender side of it; it wins the heart. One has to consider the evil it does in order to get rid of it...."

Considerado uno de los mejores novelistas universales, es conocido principalmente por su novela Madame Bovary, además de por su escrupulosa devoción a su arte y su estilo, cuyo mejor ejemplo fue su interminable búsqueda de le mot juste (‘la palabra exacta’).

George Sand, nacida Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin en 1804 en París, fue una escritora francesa emblemática del Romanticismo. Adoptó un nombre masculino para firmar sus obras y vistió ropa de hombre, desafiando las convenciones sociales de su época y ganándose un lugar en un mundo literario dominado por hombres.

Creció en la finca familiar de Nohant, donde desarrolló un profundo amor por la vida rural, que se reflejaría en muchas de sus novelas. Después de un matrimonio que terminó en separación, se trasladó a París para dedicarse por completo a la escritura. Su primera novela importante, Indiana, abordó temas como la opresión femenina y la búsqueda de libertad, marcando el inicio de una prolífica carrera.

A lo largo de su vida escribió decenas de novelas, ensayos, memorias y cartas, convirtiéndose en una de las voces más influyentes y polémicas del siglo XIX. Además de su obra literaria, George Sand fue una activista comprometida con causas sociales, como los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia social.

Su casa en Nohant fue un centro cultural donde acogió a importantes artistas y escritores de su tiempo. George Sand falleció en 1876, dejando un legado duradero como pionera de la literatura y la lucha por la igualdad.
