Book Three of The Descent

She is back. Her sister is still there. They have not yet said what needs to be said.

Inanna has returned from the underworld changed: wearing the below-world's clarity in her eyes, the ring of office on her finger, and the knowledge of what she managed and what she did not say and what it cost. She has named her husband as the seasonal substitute. She has told the assembly the true thing. She is governing, for the first time, from the full depth of what she knows.

Below, Ereshkigal waits: for the shepherd king who chose to come, for the archivist who arrived with her tablets, for the word she does not yet have for what she is beginning to feel. For the conversation with her sister that has been three thousand years in the approach.

Dumuzi descends at the season's turning. Geshtinanna follows. The gray country receives its first voluntary residents and discovers, in the receiving, what it has always had the capacity to be.

And then, in the second cold season, Inanna goes back: not for the gate, not for the judgment, not for the survival of the descent. She goes back for the ring she left on the ledge, and for what the ring was only the occasion of.

Both sisters have been carrying the same morning in different forms for three thousand years. This is the story of what happens when it is finally in the same room.
