The epic has all the elements of adventure, with suspense, danger, humor, and sacrifice. Ngũgĩ's epic is a quest for the beautiful as an ideal of living, as the motive force behind migrations of African peoples. He notes, "The epic came to me one night as a revelation of ideals of quest, courage, perseverance, unity, family; and the sense of the divine, in human struggles with nature and nurture."

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (1938–2025) fue un escritor, académico y activista cultural keniano, cuya obra marcó un antes y un después en la literatura postcolonial. Su ensayo Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature (1986) sigue siendo un texto fundamental en estudios poscoloniales, y sus novelas y obras de teatro posteriores, escritas en kikuyu, consolidaron su defensa de las lenguas africanas como herramienta de liberación cultural.

Ngũgĩ murió el 28 de mayo de 2025, en Buford (Georgia, EE.UU.), a los 87 años. Aunque nunca ganó un premio literario como el Nobel, fue candidato recurrente y galardonado con importantes reconocimientos como el PEN/Nabokov Award (2022) y el Premi Internacional Catalunya (2019).
